We have several special events each month, including evening presentations, Saturday morning group events, and the Wide World Book Club for armchair travelers. We hope to see you this month - here’s what’s planned:
Tuesday, May 4th, 7 pm - Incredible India with Julie Coen
Join Julie Coen, co-founder of Imprint Tours, for a journey to the best of Northern India, where we will visit diverse landscapes, cities, architecture, archeological sites, and religious sites and monuments. Highlights include the holy city of Varanasi, the Taj Mahal, the abandoned Mughal capital of Fatehpur Sikri, the erotic temple architecture of Khajuraho, and the forts, palaces, and desert of Rajasthan. In Rajasthan, we’ll visit Jaipur, home to an 18th century astronomical observatory, a City Palace, and the famous Hawa Mahal, or Palace of the Winds. We’ll also visit beautiful Udaipur, with its two floating palaces and many-tiered City Palace, as well as the nearby Kumbalgarh fort, a 15th-century fort situated in the Aravalli hills that fulfills your fantasies about Rajput grandeur. While in Jodhpur we’ll take a look at the labyrinthine streets of the “Blue City” and tour the mighty Mehrangarh Fort, greatest in Rajasthan and still owned and operated by the Maharaja of Jodhpur. Join Julie for a fascinating look at this enchanting country.
Tuesday, May 11th, 7 pm - Let It Go, Louie: Croatian Immigrants on Puget Sound with authors Gary Loverich and Barbara Winther
Join authors Gary Loverich and Barbara Winter as they read from Let It Go, Louie, their beautifully written book about Croatian families who immigrated from Croatia to the Puget Sound area in the early 1900s. In his review of the book, maritime historian and author Gary M. White writes, “It is a fascinating account of migration, of the immigrants’ deep commitment to the livelihood of fishing, of the skills used to build fishing boats, as well as the memories and stories of the families on Bainbridge Island taken from extensive taped interviews and written records. Over two dozen Croatian family histories are described, in addition to descriptions of their love, devotion, and commitment to Croatian culture. Over two hundred photos from family albums and the Bainbridge Island Historical Society illustrate the many stories. Let it Go, Louie is a major contribution to the history of the Croatian culture in the Puget Sound area. I highly recommend it.”
Wednesday, May 12th, 7 pm - Armchair Traveler’s Book Club: Traveler’s Tales with authors Maliha Masood and Sara Bathum
The Armchair Traveler’s Book Club will enjoy a special treat this month as we host a reading by two contributors to the Travelers’ Tales - Best Women’s Travel Writing 2010. This year’s award-winning anthology showcases the world’s finest female travel narratives, with 27 stories set in the most far-flung places, from an icy Ecuadoran volcano to a Persian kitchen. Two of the authors will read their selections, one set in Pakistan and one in Ethiopia. Readers and listeners are sure to be inspired to either book their first trip or continue exploring the globe. This book will be 10% off during the month of May.
Saturday, May 15th, 9 am - Gutsy Women
This informal gathering is for women to meet and learn from each other’s travel experiences and share wisdom learned on the road. Bring your coffee and your questions! This group meets each month on the 3rd Saturday.
Tuesday, May 18th, 7 pm - Go The Second Mile: Volunteer Vacations with author Leigh Buchan
Join Leigh Buchan for an inspirational evening, experiencing the people and the culture of communities around the world while working alongside them. See what volunteers experience after hiking into a remote historically Tibetan village of Yunnan Province, China, high in the Himalayas. Visit a Rwandan village of genocide survivors of widows and orphans as they seek to develop a trade to support themselves. Find great camaraderie among the Batwa students of Burundi, Africa, as we support their learning experience with English or computer skills or agriculture-whatever they need. Work and laugh with us along side the world’s poor as we partner with them to bring meaningful change to their lives and to ours.
Tuesday, May 25th, 7pm - Our Annual Slides & Tell!
We wrap up our events for the year with the annual “Slides & Tell”, where YOU get to be the star of the show. We invite customers to bring in 5-10 slides or digital images in a projectable format and the story that goes with them. We provide the laptop and digital projector (or traditional slide projector), so bring your images on a flash drive or DVD. Just call or send us an email (206-634-3453 or travel@speakeasy.net) to help us know how many to plan for and where you’ll be taking us. Come, be part of the fun!
